45th Anniversary of Apollo 11 Launch Gains National Attention

Fri, Jul 18, 2014 at 1:19PM

It’s hard to believe that the historic Apollo 11 launch took place from right here in Cape Canaveral 45 years ago.

The Saturn V rocket blasted off from Launch Complex 39A at 9:32 a.m. EST with hundreds of thousands of spectators watching.

After making one and a half orbits around the Earth, the Apollo 11 crew set off for the Moon and eventually landed there four days later with the famous words, “That’s one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind.”

Not only was this a giant leap for mankind, but it garnered national attention drawing every eye in the country (and beyond) to the Cape Canaveral/Cocoa Beach area. Celebrating this milestone anniversary has once again turned the public eye to our great beach town(s), and the Cocoa Beach Regional Chamber of Commerce CVB was happy to field excited calls about events in our area.

While space is certainly our roots here on the Space Coast, and a trip to the Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex is a must during your visit, there are a bevy of activities here, from great restaurants, to shopping, to our Port and beyond. The Cocoa Beach area is a wonderful place to live, visit and celebrate!
