Each year, the Cocoa Beach Regional Chamber of Commerce's Convention & Visitors Bureau (CVB) embarks on a mini-FAM Tour with its volunteers as a show of appreciation for all they do on a daily basis. This year, our volunteers enjoyed a great breakfast provided by Space Coast Dine Around & More, comfortable transportation provided by Sunward Tours, a beautiful cruise on the Indian River Lagoon compliments of Island Boat Lines and a luncheon at the Comfort Inn & Suites with food provided by Brano's Italian Grill!
The support of our CVB members is tremendous, and we very much appreciate the generosity of our sponsors this year! Our Fall-themed breakfast was fantastic and a lot of fun! Our 19-person shuttle was comfortably air conditioned, prompt, and our driver Mike got us to each location early!
It was the perfect sunny morning for a leisurely cruise with Island Boat Lines. Our captain Art and Tour Guide Jack were very knowledgeable and extremely entertaining with their great sense of humor! Our group saw several species of birds, vegetation and dolphins and manatees! As we passed by a canal home, we couldn't help but notice a gentleman pulling up some oyster cages and hosing them off. He offered our group the opportunity to pass around one of his oysters and explained his participation in the Brevard Zoo's Oyster program in an effort to begin the process of filtering out harmful properties in the lagoon!
We learned several fun facts on our tour, such as:
-Manatees can hold their breath for up to 20 minutes underwater!
- From the moment they are born, dolphins never stop moving. The reason for this is that dolphins have 2 different sides to their brain, one of which can sleep while the other side remains awake!
-Brown pelicans are a regular and native sight here in Brevard, but we didn't realize that juveniles have a brown head, while their adult counterparts have a white head!
We ended our day with a delicious Italian lunch at the Comfort Inn & Suites in Cocoa Beach. A brief presentation was provided by the hotel to discuss amenities and their great cruise parking packages! I was also able to discuss the CVB's visitor numbers (828 visitors came through our door in the month of August), as well as our social media efforts!
It was the perfect day for a group of dedicated volunteers who give so much to their community and our tourists. I can't thank our sponsors enough and I hope all of our readers will make it a point to try these great businesses out!
