Cocoa Beach: A Town with a Master Plan

Fri, Jul 25, 2014 at 11:56AM

Sun, sand, surf, restaurants, shopping, fun and nightlife. These are just a few words that come to mind when I think “Cocoa Beach” and its surrounding area.

The birthplace of 11 time ASP World Tour Champion surfer Kelly Slater, Cocoa Beach and its surrounding area has been called a sleepy surf town. While the surfing part may be true, Cocoa Beach is anything but sleepy! And at the CVB’s July Power Lunch, City Manager Bob Majka showed us the master plan to prove it!

The city has big plans to upgrade the area, without changing the staples of the Cocoa Beach “feel.”

What’s on the (beachy) horizon you ask? See below!

  1. Showcase the history of Cocoa Beach
  2. Improve the environment with more native landscaping while reducing surface parking
  3. Improve architecture standards
  4. Carefully grow three connected centers of development – the Cocoa Beach Pier, the Gateway Tourism District and Downtown Cocoa Beach
  5. Become pedestrian and bicycle friendly
  6. Shape space – connect the Banana River to the ocean
  7. Upgrade Shepard Beach Park and increase awareness of the waterfront
  8. Upgrade the “people spaces” by increasing shaded and memorable places to go
  9. Create a signature gateway experience by evoking a sense of arrival and branding the city in a new light

The city aims to maintain a safe city, deliver effective services to Cocoa Beach citizens, maintain the family friendly resort-oriented community that citizens and visitors can afford, maintain an effective stewardship of Cocoa Beach’s significant natural resources and build and maintain a healthy business climate.

Make sure to come through Cocoa Beach on your next visit to the Space Coast and watch the progression as these changes take place over the next several years!
